Dear, I'm so GLAD to hear this, you have no idea. :D I wanted to achieve both originality and realism, because as much as I love classic supernatural elements, I was unhappy with the thought of just dropping in a ghost or two.
Bob's badly in denial, yes. He knows he's losing control, but he's not used to be the one who needs help, so he doesn't ask for it, believing that he'd eventually find a way to fix things. Ray isn't used to that either, he's never had to look after Bob before.
